Kids' Summer Electronics Solution - Home

One issues we face in our home, especially as summer rolls around, is how to monitor and limit time spent on video games, computers, movies, etc. I came up with the solution that has turned out to be quite fun, so I am sharing it with you.

I made coupons for 30 minutes of "electronics time" that my children can use for computer time, video games, movies, etc. In addition to helping limit the amount of electronic time, the coupons have turned into a little ‘token economy' in our house. They get traded for toy time, saved for later use, etc. So my kids are learning a little bit about economics as well. They have also had an opportunity to be truly generous to each other by giving electronics time.

The coupons are business card sized. They print 10 to a sheet and then you can cut them out.

The only snag has been that as they played with friends and didn't use all the coupons, they have saved up enough coupons that I had to print more. So instead of printing a ton of 30 minute coupons, I made 60 and 120 minute coupons.

During the summer we give our kids a total of 2 hours of electronics time per day. You'll have to decide what's appropriate for your children.

Share them with anyone you'd like.

God bless!
Pastor John

Downlaod zipped folder with Electronic Time Usage Coupons PDF.

The PDF files are in a zipped folder. You will need to be able to unzip the folder and then open PDF files. Most computers can do these things without any trouble, but you may need to get adobe's free Acrobat Reader to open the PDFs. (google Acrobat Reader and it will be on the top of the list).

Visit our "Around the Bible in 80 Days" page

We often spend so much time looking at individual verses or stories from the Bible that we lose sight of how the whole things fits together. The Bible is a collection of documents written over a period of at least 1,400 years by around 40 different authors from all walks of life and all types of places, from prison to the throne, from the farm to the city, from the homeland to life in exile. The Bible includes many different literary styles including historical narrative, poetry, epistolary (letters), apacolyptic (dream/symbolic), proverbs and more.

Join pastor John on a fascinating journey through the entire Bible in just 11 Sundays! This broad understanding will help you to get a deeper handle on God's work throughout history and in your life. Understanding the greater context in which different parts of the Bible were written will deepen your understanding and, consequently, your faith.

Every message comes with a handout that includes graphic elements to help you remember each of the major episodes Pastor John will cover. And there is light-hearted memory video that will be added to each week. Watch it often and say the major episodes as they appear. In no time at all you will be able to recite the basic contents of the Bible from beginning to end!

Visit our "Around the Bible in 80 Days" page for message recordings, printable handouts and the memory videos, updated each week as more information is added.

We chose the name, "Journey of Life," because we believe that every person's life is a spiritual journey. Every person is welcome at Journey of Life, regardless of his or her beliefs or spiritual background. As a church for people on the spiritual journey of life, we are committed to being a place where people can:
be themselves; make some real friends in this community;learn and live profound spiritual truths in very practical ways; andhave a really great time. (We wouldn't be introducing Journey of Life to you completely if we didn't tell you that we laugh quite a bit!) Click on "Family Resources" to the left to reach "Ready, Click, Grow!" You will find ideas and resources for keeping your family growing together and passing on your faith to the children around you, whether you are single, married without children, married with young children, married with older children, empty-nesters, grandparents, cousins, aunts, uncles... you get the idea. Journey of Life is about people, community, love and the wonderful life we have found as followers of Jesus Christ. At this point, may be wondering... Do I belong at Journey of Life?Who is Jesus and what's the big deal about him? What is "Lutheran"?

Volunteer Job Descriptions - Vol. Job Descriptions

Get plugged in and feel like a part of the Journey of Life family by choosing an area in which to serve. The Volunteer Job Descriptions listed below provide a starting framing for meaningful service at Journey of Life.

If there is a ministry that is on your heart, that might be your place of service. Sarah Griffith is a great example. She has a passion for Financial Peace University and has implemented FPU at Journey of Life. Real lives are really being changed for the better through this program. Perhaps there is something you have experienced as life-changing. Why not share that joy with others? If you have a ministry idea, talk to Pastor John.

Most of the job descriptions have a period of commitment. If you are not sure if a particular service opportunity is for you, you can decide to do it for a shorter period of time as a trial (e.g. 6 weeks).

You can also download the message handout for each week. It is in the Adobe PDF format, so you will need to download Adobe's free Acrobat Reader program if you don't already have it.

This guided online Bible studies series follows a message series at Journey of Life. The series is based on a most excellent book by Dr. Henry Cloud called (can you believe it?), "Nine Things You Simply Must Do to Succeed in Love and Life."

Over the years, Dr. Cloud noticed a pattern among people whose lives were successful -- not necessarily monetarily, but in the overall sense. They accomplish what they want to. They feel peace about their lives. They have healthy relationships. So he brought his years of experience and training to bear on this observation and identified nine things that these "deja vu" people, as he calls them, have in common.

Following Dr. Cloud's book, Pastor John examines what he has to say from the Biblical perspective, starting with examining the very idea of "success." The live recordings of the messages are available elsewhere on this web site in the sermon archive if you'd like to hear them. The guided online Bible studies are below.

Feel free to send Pastor John feedback if you'd like. Use the contact link on the front page of this web site.

Enjoy!

The video below includes the major episodes of the Bible in chronological order. Watch the video and repeat the episodes to yourself as they hop over the Bible (yes, the video is a little light-hearted!). Soon you will have the entire chronology of the Bible stored in your head. Then when you read something from the scriptures, you will have a larger context in which to place it and your understanding of God's Word will be that much deeper.

This video will be updated each week to include more books of the Bible and more graphic elements to help jog your memory.

While everyone is responsible for outreach, some are called to full- or part-time missionary work as a major commitment of the time given them on earth: some to the front lines, some to organizing outreach efforts, some to the administrative support required for worldwide missionary efforts. One these missionary pages you will find missionaries that give significant amounts of time and energy to the task of worldwide ministry in Jesus' name. Some are on a volunteer basis. Some have dedicated their lives. The ones who have answered the call to full-time ministry in Jesus name offer you and excellent opportunity to excersize the spiritual gift of giving. Some of them receive monthly support from Journey of Life, but not near enough to cover their living expenses. Browse through the missionaries below and consider becoming a monthly financial and prayer partner with one or more of the missionaries and ministers who depend on the faithful giving of others to continue their ministry (as indicated by the words 'faith-based support' following their name):Peggy Seitz (faith-based support)David & Ruth Snyder (faith-based support)Mike & Lee Anne Sorgius (faith-based support)SJ (faith-based support)Tom & Marilynn KempWayne & Grace Wilke

Peggy Seitz - Wycliffe Associates - Cameroon - Peggy Seitz

WHEN PEGGY SEITZ and her team set out the large plastic owl, they didn't think anything of it. They were leading a Vacation Bible School program for missionary children in Cameroon, and each day featured a different animal as the mascot. It was Owl Day. However, it wasn't long before Peggy learned of her team's innocent mistake: Many of the villagers believe owls are vampires and have a deep fear of the animal. "At first I thought it was kind of funny," Peggy said. "But then I realized that this was an example of how people without God in their lives live in fear. These people need the Lord."

Since 2006, Peggy has been committed to helping people like these discover God's peace-men, women, and children who have never read the Bible in their own language because it doesn't exist. Initially, she volunteered with Wycliffe Associates to help provide much-needed support for Bible translators abroad. But she eventually came aboard as our International Jobs Coordinator, working to organize job opportunities around the world for volunteers who want to help accelerate Bible translation. Peggy's breadth of experience (she has an accounting degree and an elementary teaching certificate) has made her a wonderful asset to the Wycliffe Associates ministry.

Peggy's mission goal is to relocate to Cameroon, where she will take on a new position as the Volunteer Center Manager, hosting and assisting teams of volunteers arriving to support Bible translators in the region. In a recent ranking of countries with the greatest need for Bible translation, Cameroon was number seven on the list. The African country is home to 89 language groups that are still without the Scriptures in their own language. The volunteers Peggy will be managing in her new role will provide vital support to translators working on Bible translations in 50 of these languages.

Peggy looks forward to any opportunity to share with others how hearts and lives are being transformed around the world as the Scriptures are translated. And how God is using Wycliffe Associates volunteers-unique individuals with a variety of skills and backgrounds-to help bring the tools local translators need to introduce their people to Christ.
